Wind: Mexico’s Renewable Energy of Choice

Some would associate Mexico with sun and beach, therefore fertile ground for a thriving solar energy sector. However, wind is Mexico’s most mature renewable energy sector.

Proof of this is the latest investment of $700 million in the Marena Renovables project in Mexico’s Isthmus de Tehuantepec in Oaxaca. According to a Macquarie Mexican Infrastructure Fund (MMIF) press release, the 396 MW wind energy project is under development since March 2012. The project is expected to reach completion by the end of the year.

It’s Official: Mexico Enacts Climate Change Law

April 24, 2012

The Mexican Senate unanimously passed the General Climate Change Law last Thursday evening, 19th of May, making it the first developing country to pass a law with comprehensive long-term objectives for combating climate change.

Mexico’s General Climate Change Law outlines the following goals:

A reduction in carbon emissions by 50% by 2050.
35% of Mexico’s electricity comes from renewable energy sources by 2024.
The establishment of the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, a research and development institution.
The creation of a foundation for raising and channeling public, private, national and international financial resources for carrying out relevant projects.

Mexico’s New Climate Change Law Almost a Reality

Mexico’s new General Climate Change Law will be the second such law in the world, positioning Mexico as a competitive economy in the renewable energy sector. Already approved by the Mexican House of Representatives with 280 votes in favor and 10 against, the General Climate Change Law will become a reality once approved by the Mexican Senate.

Mexico’s First 50 MW Solar Power Plant in the Works

SolFocus announced the launch of Mexico’s first 50 MW solar power plant in Baja California, a joint project between Mexico’s Grupo Musa, and US-based Synergy Technologies and SolFocus. Though Mexico’s renewable energy sector has historically focused more on wind energy, the launch of this new solar power plant opens the doors to new solar energy investments in Mexico.
